Australia’s preparations for the crucial pink-ball Test against India took an unexpected turn on Tuesday. Star dough Steve Smith left the nets after hitting his thumb. Smith looked visibly uncomfortable while facing shots. He immediately took off his gloves and inspected the wound before walking away.
However, Smith received emergency medical attention. Soon after, he returned to training, much to the relief of the Australian camp. The session also saw Marnus Labushagne hit a short ball, but a thick shot cleared it away and started to practice.
Smith and Labusse struggle with form
Both Smith and Labuschagne have come under fire for their recent performances. Smith chased down a golden duck in the first Test with a deficit of 17. Another failure of the Labuschagne twin has raised questions about his form.
However, both Smith and Labuschagne will be hoping to feature in the pink ball Test against the return. India. Smith, the second highest scorer in pink ball Tests, boasts 760 runs at an average of 40 from 11 matches. Labuschagne, with 894 runs from eight matches at an impressive average of 63.85, leads the format’s round tables. Both are eager to bounce back and silence their critics under the Adelaide lights.
Australia without Hazlewood in second Test
Australia’s injury woes extend beyond the batting department. Their star accelerator Josh Hazlewood was deprived of the second Test against India due to tension between the parties. He was Australia’s champion when they last faced India in a pink-ball Test. Hazlewood led the Australian pacers in the match and took a 5-wicket haul as India were all out for 36.
But Australia announced Scott Boland in place of Josh Hazlewood. Boland played 2 Tests against India, including in the final of the 2023 Test World Cup. He took 5 wickets in that match. Australia went to receive an honorary degree.
On the other hand, Mitchell Marsh declared himself stable and ready to play. There were also injury concerns around him. Bo Webster is another addition to the Australian squad.
