In David Carson’s 1994 “Star Trek: Generation”, Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) was inside a mysterious temporary Nexus, a magically spatial phenomenon that raises people and embedded them in a sky -like pocket dimension. The time has no meaning in Nexus, which means that people can quite much spend an eternity inside it without having gone in the outer universe. 87 years after Kirk has been raised, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) is also snagged, and he also lives short in this sky. However, Picard has an assignment to think about. He must prevent a crazy scientist named Dr. Soren (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a star and killing millions. Since there is no time in Nexus, he and Kirk technically arrived at exactly the same time. Picard convinces Kirk to leave Nexus, and de Fistfight Dr. Soren together.
But in the scraper Kirk walks toward a shaky catwalk and falls to his death. His last word to Picard is: “It was fun.” Picard buries him under a pile of stones and probably leaves him there to decompose.
Of course, Kirk has resurrected in small, non-canonical ways since then. IN William Shatner’s novel from 1995 “The Return”, Kirk’s body is located and resurrected by Borg and works under pressure from Romulan (!). More recently, fans saw Kirk crossing the afterlife (?) In a non-cannon short film 2023 called “765874: Unification.” The same year, in a section of “Star Trek: Picard”, it was canonically explained that Kirk’s body had really been rescued from the planet where he died and held in refrigeration storage on a secret Starfleet Black place.
Extra polishing from the latter story, a new IDW series magazine will once again revive James T. Kirk, this time many hundreds of years beyond “next generation” time. According to a new press release, the new story will be called “The Last Starship.”
The last spaceship will see James T. Kirk and his experiences with the burns
The “Star Trek” comedian from IDW publishing, it should be noted, is also non-canonic, so “The Last Starship” is just a provocative opportunity for the character. The series will be written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and drawn by Adrián Bonilla.
According to the description in the press release, “The Last Starship” will see Kirk’s body found on the Starfleet Black Web site and in some way resurrected with the help of ultra-deducted technology. The story is canceled in 3069, which is 698 years after the events in “Star Trek: Generations.” Kirk will resurface just in time to witness the burns, an event described in The third season of “Star Trek: Discovery.” It seems that 3069 will be an unusual, galaxy -wide disaster will unexpectedly beat. Each spaceship with dilithium crystals on board (ie almost everyone) will spontaneously explode. Cataclysm ends quite a lot of civilization that we know, which causes the federation to fall and a widespread, money-and-slaver-based mercantile system rises in place.
The third season of “Discovery” takes place about 120 years after the burns. It seems that “The Last Starship” will take place right when it happens. Kirk will obviously take command of a new, the spaceship of the 31st century that are populated by all new characters. It will be Kirk’s job to understand the new future he is in, but also try to keep as much of the damaged federation as he can possibly.
This is a fun idea. The Stalwart mind would be needed after the burns, so why not have it to be James T. Kirk? After all, we know where his body is. Sure, in the 3000s, the technology has developed to Frankenstein back to life.
What the authors say
Kelly, one of the authors, said the following in a press release:
“The only familiar face is what you would never expect to see in this era: Captain James T. Kirk. (…) William Shatner’s iconic performance exceeds the boundaries. Kirk is one of the big characters in the modern fiction cannon, with a timeless actor to match. to match. He was also the first “Star Trek” character we ever wrote – a leader and Warrior with a poet with a timeless actor that matches. Uncharted, pioneering territory in ‘The Last Starship.’ “
However, the authors wanted to assure the audience that “the last spaceship” will not be isolated or unclear to non-three. Sure, Trekkies will have a working knowledge of “Star Trek: Generation”, “Star Trek: Picard”, and the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery”, but it seems that all necessary background information will be provided in Kelly’s and Lanzig’s comic. The only thing readers will need to know about is James T. Kirk, and we all know about him, right?
“The Last Starship” will debut on September 24, 2025. It will be the first of a new party of “Star Trek” comedians from IDW Publishing, a line that will also include new stories inspired by “Star Trek: Strange New World” and “Star Trek: Voyager.” Again, these stories are non-canonic, but it has always been fun for Trekkies to speculate on countless “what about?” scenarios. The series, such as video games and novels, are just more stories with our favorite “Trek” characters, and we welcome as many people as possible.
