Much has been said Lucasfilm’s shock decision to cancel The Acolyte earlier this year, but the studio itself, eager to move on to what comes next (and what is further on), he remained very calm regarding the specific backlash the cast and crew of the series endured during the show’s run, even as the cast slowly began to face it alone.

The actor added that he was “shocked” by the specifically racial undertones of some of the negative reactions to the series, which there have been focused in particular on Amandla Stenberg’s portrait of Osha and Mae, the twins at the center of the series. “I can only have faith that racism will end one day, even though it will be hard,” Lee continued. “For some works, it takes time to gain traction, and I have strong hopes that people will like it as time goes by.”
But nevertheless The Acolyte(and Lucasfilm’s silence on both the series and its treatment of the cast and crew), Lee himself is confident in the face of the backlash. “As long as I’m grateful, everything will be fine,” Lee concluded. “Fandom accompanies my career. That’s the nature of the thing, so I can’t take it for granted. No matter what, I am always grateful.
