Goals and highlights as ‘for the month’ Vardy helps Leicester beat West Ham and Palace win at Ipswich


There were two games in the bottom half of the Premier League table on Tuesday as Ipswich Town played at home to Crystal Palace and West Ham visited Leicester City.

The Foxes competed for the first time under new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Manchester United league top scorer who took charge at Old Trafford on an interim basis last month.

Ipswich started the evening third from bottom and, thanks to two home draws, are on points with Leicester in 17th place and Palace immediately above them.

Leicester vs West Ham: Ruud’s wake

Leicester’s Vaane Nistelrooy opened the scoring when Jamie Vardy struck for West Ham after two minutes at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy pounced on Bilal El Hannuss’s low pass from the left side of the visitors’ defence, entered the penalty area and into the far corner of the net, and after a video review the assistant referee ruled a goal on the right.

West Ham had 20 shots on target during the first half and were denied a goal after the break, however, when El Hannous found the back of Casey McAteer to finish past Lukasz Fabianski.

Patson Daka broke Leicester’s third in the 90th minute to ensure Niklas Fulkrug’s reply from Chrisencio Somerville’s corner was irrelevant as Van Nistelrooy’s reign began in style.

“It was just the beginning,” Vardy told Amazon Prime Video Sport, describing himself as “over the moon”. “We spent a full day working as a full team (with Van Nistelrooy).

“You could see that some things were working and some were a bit rusty… (now we) will have more time on the training ground with the new manager to understand his ideas.

“We know what qualities[El Hannous]has – he’s been training every day. His first goal will be the first of many.

“You can get (the fans) singing here and then join in the festivities. We’re just going to make sure we hit the ground running now.”

The win moved Leicester four points clear of the relegation zone, while the Hammers suffered their second straight defeat and third loss in five games.

Ipswich vs Palace: Mateta makes the difference

Palace took advantage of a poor performance from their opponents to go three points from bottom three and move The Tractor Boys into second place after 14 games.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first away goal of the season settled the tie, capping a fine encounter and producing a clinical finish for the 59th-minute winner.

Striker Mateta should have doubled Palace’s lead but was denied by an impressive save from Aro Muric, while Ipswich hit a header from Jacob Greaves.

Eagles manager Oliver Glasner told BBC Match of the Day: “It wasn’t about a great performance.” “We expected a great fight and it was a great fight.

“It was an amazing goal, an amazing finish. We had two or three chances to take the game away from them and we didn’t take them. In the end we had to be a bit lucky but we deserved to win.

“When JP gets the ball in the box, he’s a very good finisher and that’s usually a goal. We’re happy with our defensive performance; we didn’t give them a chance from open play, just one set piece in the first half and one in the second half.”

Palace have now lost one of their last seven games in all competitions, while Ipswich are still looking for a second league win of the campaign.
