Kerala tragedy: 5 medical students killed in high-speed car-bus collision near Alappuzha


Five first-year MBBS students from Kerala’s Alappuzha Medical College tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Monday evening. According to police, their vehicle collided with a KSRTC passenger bus near Alappuzha.

Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand and Srideep are named as the victims of the tragic incident. The accident took place after 9 pm when their Tavera vehicle reportedly over-speeded, lost control and collided with a KSRTC bus traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam. According to eyewitnesses, the car was torn into pieces, and the medical students were thrown onto the road.

Three medical students died at the scene of the accident, while two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Two more students are currently hospitalized in the same hospital, one of whom is in critical condition. According to reports, a total of 10 students were in the car at the time of the accident.

Details of the accident

According to locals, Alappuzha Municipality Vice-Chairman PSM Hussain said the car was trying to overtake another vehicle when it hit the brakes, causing it to skid and collide with an oncoming KSRTC bus. The students were reportedly on their way to Kochi. “We are waiting for CCTV footage from the area as there are CCTV cameras at the accident site,” Hussain added.

The bus driver stated that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed and a head-on collision was unavoidable despite his efforts to avoid the collision. The Tavera car was completely destroyed by the impact. Following the incident, traffic on the road was severely disrupted. According to police reports, the authorities have not yet established the exact cause of the accident.

An investigation is underway

The police and the traffic police started an investigation into the accident. In a separate incident on December 1, an ambulance and a KSRTC government bus collided on the Punalur-Muvattupuzha state highway, injuring eight passengers. The bus was traveling on the Thiruvananthapuram – Pathanamthita route.
