Although we have seen Superman stories the big screen-i the small screen—many times before, including some very recent iterations, there is still intense excitement for James Gunn’s next film. Not only is the writer-director the new co-head of DC Studios, but his track record is full of projects that delight and entertain, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy If someone can make a movie titled Superman feeling fresh, it’s Gunn, but he’s still well aware that his 2025 release treads familiar territory.
However, it is possibly even more aware of how his Superman it’s unlike every other Man of Steel adventure that’s come before it. Speaking with Josh Horowitz at Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn explained what will set his superhero story apart from the pack.
“I don’t think we’ve ever seen the great sci-fi, the silver age Superman aspects that we have in our movie,” he told the host. “And we’ve never seen … you’ll see when the movie comes out, but we’ve never seen that specific part of Superman’s life.”
This also happens with the villain. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen the Lex (Luthor) that (Nicholas Hoult) is. Nick is imposing. You’re like, ‘Oh shit, poor Superman!’ That’s what we never see, not in the movies. Sometimes in the comics you’re like, ‘Oh, Superman is screwed,’ because Lex is so smart and so good at what he does. But in the movies, you’re like, ‘Lex he’s about to get screwed.” … We’ve got a really big Superman and a pretty tall Lex, too, (and) now you see where Lex is not the person you want to have against you.
Supermanwhich also stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Wendell Pierce as in Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and more, hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
