How the two-hour martial law unfolded in South Korea

South Korean lawmakers have begun impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk-yeol after his shock move to impose martial law failed.

Two hours after they were announced, MPs voted to block the resolution by forcing the National Assembly to vote.

Some had broken the barricades to enter the building.

The president has said martial law is needed to protect the country from “North Korean communist forces” and to “eliminate anti-state elements”, but it is seen as a response to domestic pressure and a series of scandals.
