There are many others online word games now, but I still listen to the New York Times Wordle I play every day. Nowadays, it’s not just an old friend, it’s also a nice warm-up for Connections, Strands and the rest.

Furthermore, we have ranked all the letters of the alphabet based on popularityif you want to use this list to decide on the best starting words.

Daily Wordle Tips

I’ve written a lot in Wordle — since covering his thousandth word to my list of the best opening words to a useful two-step strategy to the news on controversial word changes. I also rounded up what I learned from playing the successful online word puzzle game for an entire year. If you’re rethinking your need for an actual answer, you might try the suggestions from one of those stories.

Still need a starting word? One person told me that he simply looks around and chooses a five-letter object that he has identified as his starting word, such as SOFA or CHAIR. I tend to stick to initial words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I read those people use the financial term ROATEbut I like to use words that I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether the letters you guessed are in the puzzle or not and whether they are in the same place as you guessed them. The New York Times purchased the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle created the famous game for his partner and allowed her to narrow down the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to just 2,500, creating the answer database. It was also convenient that he had a name that played on the “word”.

A Times spokesperson told me it lists the first Wordle as having appeared on June 19, 2021, and the paper celebrated the game’s 1,000th word on March 15. Spoiler: that thousandth word was ERUPT. As in “Dad will explode if the Wordle is so tough he loses his streak.”
