NYC Home to Nearly 60k ‘Criminal’ Immigrants: Report

The comments by Malliotakis, who represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, followed US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency data obtained by the New York Post that showed 58,626 out of 759,218. Illegal immigrants New York City residents were previously convicted of a felony or had criminal charges pending, or 7.7% of the city’s illegal immigrant population.

Of the 58,626 criminal immigrants, 1,153 were “suspected or known gang members,” the report added.

“In many cases, they have provided them with housing, food and healthcare. They should stop using New Yorkers’ hard-earned tax dollars to protect the criminals wreaking havoc on our streets and instead cooperate with ICE to deport them,” Malliotakis said.

Nationwide numbers largely reflect that New York City, The data showed that 662,586 — or 8.6% — of the 7.8 million illegal immigrants living in the United States currently have criminal convictions or pending charges.

“These numbers make clear what everyone knows except our elected officials: Sanctuary city laws are endangering New York by protecting criminals instead of protecting law-abiding citizens,” Councilman Robert Holden, a Queens Democrat, told the New York Post. ICE data is shown.

Meanwhile, Council Minority Leader Joe Borrelli, Republican of Staten Island, said he was “shocked, but not surprised” by the ICE data.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams Recent calls to loosen the city’s sanctuary policies, the report noted, cited the mayor’s calls to more easily turn over immigrants “suspected” of “serious” crimes to federal authorities, though the mayor has argued he doesn’t have enough support from the City Council to change the rules.

Meanwhile, the mayor’s office has blamed the border crisis on the Biden administration for the city’s struggles.

“Mayor Adams has said repeatedly that while we will continue to respect our city’s sanctuary laws, we need to have a serious conversation about the small number of individuals who repeatedly commit violent crimes in our city and the consequences they face,” Kayla Mamelak, a spokeswoman for Adams, told the New York Post. “We must fix this nation’s failed border policies that got us to this place.”
