President Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter has drawn criticism from some of his Democrats.

“As a father, I get that. But as someone who wants people to trust public service again, it’s a setback,” Rep. Greg Landesman, D-Ohio, wrote in X.

The 82-year-old president accused Republicans of weaponizing the justice system against his son, saying he was “selectively and unfairly” prosecuted.
“I respect President Biden, but I think he got this wrong,” said Rep. said Greg Stanton, D-Ariz. “This was not a politically motivated prosecution. Hunter committed crimes and was convicted by a jury of his peers.”
Jared Polis, also the Democratic governor of Colorado criticized the decision.
“As a father, while I certainly understand (Biden’s) natural desire to help his son by pardoning him, I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of his country. This is a bad example that a future president could vilify and will sadly tarnish his reputation,” Polis said in a lengthy statement.

“Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with their struggles while acknowledging that no one is above the law, not the president and not the president’s son.”
Still, the president’s other Democratic allies pushed back.
“Look at the underlying facts and general DOJ practice Governor,” former Attorney General Eric Holder, who served with Biden in the Obama administration, responded to the police at X.
In a separate post, Holder wrote, “No (the US Attorney) would have charged this case given the underlying facts. The facts uncovered after a 5-year investigation made that clear. Had his name been Joe Smith, the resolution would have been — essentially and more fairly — a pardon warrant.”
Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., said he had “mixed views” on Biden’s pardon.

Like Holder, Hunter argued that the family name was a factor in the lawsuits against him — but worried that it could set a precedent that Republicans could use in return.

“Even though I don’t think Hunter Biden could be prosecuted under those circumstances, I think a pardon would be used at this point by Democrats who are pushing to protect the Justice Department from being politicized, which is certainly what President Trump plans to do,” Ivey told CNN on Monday morning.
“I know there was a real strong feeling that Hunter Biden wanted to be protected from an unfair trial. But this is going to be used against us as we fight the abuses coming from the Trump administration.”
