A small asteroid smashed into Earth’s atmosphere and produced a spectacular fireball in the sky across Russia’s Far East early Wednesday morning.
People in the remote Russian republic of Sakha in northeastern Siberia stood in the snow to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon, spotting it about 12 hours before astronomers arrived, the European Space Agency (ESA) said.
According to ESA, the asteroid measured approximately 70cm and entered Earth’s atmosphere at 01:15 local time (16:15 GMT).
Officials have been put on alert but no damage has been reported since the asteroid landed, Sakha’s emergency ministry said.
