At least 10 people have died outside the cricket stadium in the Indian city, which is organizing a victory march to celebrate the Indian Premier League title of the home team.
Thousands of youths and seniors took to the streets on Wednesday to welcome Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who defeated Punjab kings in the IPL cricket final the previous day.
“About 10 people have died in the gates of Chinnaswamy Stadium,” a senior police officer told BBC Hindi.
When the tragedy occurred, the stadium gates were “not even opened, but many people were trying to push through a small gate of Stamped,” an official said.
A police officer told the BBC that there were over 200,000 people for the Victory Parade but they were only expecting that amount.
The RCB team arrived at the old HAL airport to receive Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Sivakumar. He was taken to the hotel in a procession.
It was an precursor to the reception of Bhavya Vidyana Saudha’s stages of the state assembly, where Governor Thavarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other ministers met the team.
The team was scheduled to drive back to the stadium before the crush occurred.
Prior to the incident, the masses from different parts of the city had moved to the stadium in all the transportation of RCB jersey.
Metro trains were so packed, and many people, including this reporter, were unable to access any category. When passengers inside and outside the train chanted the name of the team in a chorus.
Auto rickshaws and taxis did not respond to the requests of people who want to drop anywhere near the stadium. Those who agreed abandoned passengers several kilometers away.
After reports of people lost their lives in the spread of crush, people began to rush to metro stations.
Officers closed the stations around the stadium as there was a huge crowds on platforms.
