The head of South Korea’s ruling party has called on President Yoon Suk-yeol to “immediately suspend his duties”, saying citizens could be at “great risk” if he remains in power.
Han Doong-hoon, leader of the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP), said his party had also obtained “credible evidence” that Yoon had ordered the arrest of key politicians on “anti-state charges”.
His comments appeared to be a departure from his earlier stance that his party would block impeachment by the opposition, which will be put to a vote on Saturday.
The opposition needs at least eight ruling party MPs to support the impeachment motion for it to succeed.
