‘Tis the season for Doctor whothe annual tradition of a Christmas specialand this year there’s an extra gift under the tree… in the form of an extra fifteenth Doctor.
The BBC and Disney have just released the first trailer for this year’s “Joy to the World.” Doctor who Christmas special. Written by the former showrunner–and scribe of the best episode of last season–Steven Moffat, the episode sees the Doctor meet Joy (Nicola Coughlan) in a high-tech time hotel that offers guests the chance to visit every Christmas through time travel technology. But the real twist here is this, through presumably timely anticsthe Doctor’s real obstacle this holiday season is himself.
Doubled antics aside, the trailer looks like we’re going to have the Doctor make a Very interesting self-examination. Beyond the gags where the Doctor finds his identity as the Doctor extremely frustrating to deal with when he’s on the receiving end, “Joy to the World” looks like it will explore the emotional fallout of the Doctor and Ruby’s separation at the end. end of last seasonand, more generally, why the Doctor ends up continually pushing people away from his life. Exactly what you need for Christmas viewing!
We’ll no doubt get a slightly happier version of this when “Joy to the World” arrives on Disney+ internationally and on the BBC in the UK and Ireland on Christmas Day, December 25.
