Dozens of people died in convulsions after clashes at a football match in N’zérékoré, Guinea’s second-largest city, local media reported.
Prime Minister Mamadou Ouri Bah said the stampede at the event left several victims on Sunday and called for calm.
A doctor, who did not want to be named, told AFP news agency that several bodies were “lined up” at a local hospital and the mortuary was full.
Local media reported that police fired tear gas after supporters of Labe’s team, angry at the referee, threw stones towards the pitch.
No official casualty figures have been released so far.
“It all started with a disputed decision by the referee. Then the fans invaded the pitch,” a witness told AFP.
Videos and pictures on social media show chaotic scenes outside the stadium, with large crowds trying to climb walls and several bodies on the floor.
The BBC was unable to independently verify these videos.
Prime Minister Bah said in a statement that regional authorities were working to “restore calm” and that hospitals were helping the injured.
Thousands of spectators were present at the match between Guinean teams N’zérékoré and Labé when the crush occurred, local news website Mediagunee reported.
It said Sunday’s match was part of a tournament in honor of President Mamadi Doumbouya, who seized power in a coup in September 2021.
The worst massacre in Guinea’s history took place at the stadium.
In 2009, 156 people died after soldiers opened fire on an opposition rally in a stadium in the capital, Conakry.
Many were shot, stabbed, beaten or crushed in the stampede as security forces fired tear gas and charged into the stadium. Several women were also raped.
A former military ruler Moussa Dadis Camara was recently sentenced 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity in connection with the Holocaust.
