Heathrow Airport is expecting to be very busy this year, with Christmas Day passenger numbers up more than 20 per cent on last year.
Britain’s busiest airport saw 141,000 passengers pass through its terminals on 25 December and expects this to reach ‘nearly 170,000’ passengers this year.
Heathrow said on Tuesday it would handle 6.5 million passengers for its busiest November, with routes to Singapore, Edinburgh, Lisbon, Abu Dhabi, Chicago, Zurich, Mumbai and Paris being the most popular.
Eight cities joined Heathrow’s ‘millions club’ last month after more than one million passengers since the start of the year.
Heathrow expects to reach 25 million club routes this year, up from 24 last year.
Asia Pacific routes saw the strongest growth in the month to December last year, rising 11.4 percent to nearly 11.7 million, followed by UK domestic flights at 9.8 per cent and EU routes at 8.1 per cent.

African routes were the only country to decline, down 7.5 percent to 3.3 million passengers.
Heathrow has also increased its 2023 cargo volumes by 11 per cent, which it has chalked up to ‘greater carrying capacity’ on aircraft and a stronger market application.
The airport has planned ‘celebratory activities’ for what is expected to be a very busy December, including events and greetings to Santa Claus, ‘Bjorn the polar bear’ and decorations.
