Choosing where to reserve your seats on an airplane can be a difficult experience for many people when they set off on their vacation.
Not only are passengers often torn between choosing a window or aisle seat – there’s also the conundrum of whether to pay for the benefit of extra legroom.
A flight attendant has weighed in on the debate and revealed why she prefers to always book seats in the fifth row of the plane when she’s not traveling for work.
Rosie Awad, who worked for Virgin Australia has shared for the past decade which seats she will always book — and which to avoid — when traveling on a Boeing 737-800.

Talk to Escape, via Silenceshe said: ‘I will always choose row 5 (on our B737-800) by the window.
‘There are great views, you can see the plane wing, you get extra legroom, there are no emergency exit responsibilities, you can put a bag under the front seat, it’s close for disembarkation, and is one of the first rows to served for inflight service…see why I chose it?’
Rosie also shared the worst seat for both passengers and crew, which could lead to uncomfortable situations for staff members.
She added: ‘The worst seat (for crew) is the 1R jump seat (at the front of the plane).
‘You look at the cabin, look at the passengers… they look at you… it can turn into an awkward staring contest.
‘The worst seat for passengers would have to be the last row, or any row next to a toilet (I’m so sorry for those who get any in that row).
“I think it’s pretty obvious why it’s chosen!”

It comes after a flight attendant shared three ways customers can score themselves a free upgrade in the first class cabin.
Cierra Mist, who posts videos on TikTok about her life as a flight attendant, gave viewers some handy advice on how they might be able to get an upgrade.
Sharing her first tip, she advised that the simple gesture of being friendly with your gate agent or flight attendant can get you a golden ticket to a more luxurious part of the plane.
She said: ‘We can work miracles if we get a Starbucks or a bag of chocolates when we haven’t even had time to stop for food by working on back-to-back flights.
Moving on to her second tip, Cierra shared one that may be somewhat out of your control, but may still be achievable.
Cierra said: ‘Another common way we move people up to the front of the plane when the flight is not full is to make sure the plane is balanced’.
This means that if you sit in the back of the plane in an area that is very fully booked, you may be lucky and be asked to move to the very front of first class.
Revealing her third and final tip via Instagram, Cierra said that depending on your job, you might be in luck when it comes to an upgrade.
She said: “If you’re what we call a ‘capable person’ like a doctor, nurse, firefighter or police – basically anyone who can respond to help cabin crew – then you might be able to get a free upgrade if you tell the staff how you can help if needed when you get in’.
‘Even if we can’t upgrade you to first class, we will always try to put you in an exit row – where you have more legroom – so that you can react more quickly if we need your help during an emergency’.
