Apple released iOS 18.1 in October, more than a month after the tech company’s release iOS18. While iOS 18.1 brings some new features and bug fixes to your iPhone, such as call recordingiOS 18 updated the Messages app. Apple led RCS Messaging to the app, and the tech company also gave the app the ability to do math problems.
Before iOS 18, if you wanted to figure out how to split a bill from afar with your texting group, you had to use the calculator app or Spotlight and then go back to Messages. With iOS 18, you can perform multi-step calculations in Messages, as well as convert things like currency and temperature, without switching apps.

Here’s how to have Messages do the calculations.
How to solve math problems in Messages
To solve a math equation in Messages, type your problem in the text field, add the equal sign (=) and the solution will appear in the predictive text field on the keyboard. Tap the solution to add it to the text.
Messages can solve simple equations, such as “2+2=”, by typing them into the text field. The app can also solve equations that use more complex formulas, such as sine, cosine, and tangent trigonometric functions. You must include the equal sign (=) in the end, no matter what.
How to convert values in Messages
Converting values in Messages works similarly to solving math problems in the app. Type the value in the text box with the appropriate value indicator, such as F for Fahrenheit or pounds for pounds, and then type the equal sign (=) and the intuitive text field above the keyboard will show you the conversion.
If you don’t indicate what to convert to, the predictive text will choose what to convert to. Don’t worry: it won’t try to convert pounds into minutes. The messages will show conversions to other similar units, so Fahrenheit will be converted to Celsius and pounds will be converted to kilograms.
You can choose what to convert to by typing something like “60 hours to min=” and Messages will display the conversion in the predictive text field: that’s 3,900 minutes.
