iPhone fans have just discovered the hidden ‘red mode’ that was introduced in last year’s iOS update.
This feature initially left some users worried that their equipment was damaged by water or stolen.
However, it is specifically designed to help users relax and sleep better at night as research has shown that red lights have no effect on the circadian clock.
The so-called ‘red mode’ was introduced by Apple’s iOS 17 operating system as part of StandBy – a flexible version of the Lock Screen that works when the iPhone is charging and placed next to it in the display.
To activate the color mode, you can use Color Filters to use red color or turn on Night Mode in StandBy to change the screen colors to red.
To enable Color Filters, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters.
Alternatively, enable StandBy in Settings, by connecting your iPhone to the charger, and placing it on its side.
‘You can use StandBy to turn your iPhone into a bedside clock, photo frame, or widget display or full-screen Live Events,’ it explained.

Although some worry that the blood red screen (pictured) is a sign of water damage, or hackers, or something worse, the truth is that the amazing color change is a new feature aimed at helping iPhone owners and their loved ones get a good night’s sleep
‘When Night Mode is activated in StandBy, the screen adapts to the low ambient light at night, showing things with a red tint to reduce distractions while you sleep.’
Users can set the feature to ‘Automatically’, which changes depending on the ambient light around the device, or ‘After 20 Seconds’, which turns on the red feature when the phone is charging its side.
A Reddit user sought help on the platform when their iPhone’s screen unexpectedly turned red when it was placed on its side.
‘Any ideas why my widgets are red on the lock screen?’ he asked.
Some users quickly explained, ‘The red light only comes on when your room is dark.’
Others were taken aback by the look, with one user writing: ‘What!! What!? I feel like I can’t find his place.’
One Redditor said: ‘As a staunch Android fan, I have to say that I continue to be impressed by Apple almost all the time.’
Interestingly, red light, such as the subtle color of Apple, can stimulate the release of melatonin.
Mariana Figueiro, director of the Mount Sinai Light and Health Research Center in New York City, told CNN: “The only thing you can argue about is that if you give red light in the evening before going to bed, you are reducing the disruption. circadian system.

And as one user pointed out on Reddit, the ‘red light’ will help people see better in the dark when they go to the bathroom or the kitchen for a midnight snack.

‘(That’s) because the disruption of the circadian system occurs with bright or blue light.
‘In other words, it could be that any benefit comes from replacing the light you are exposed to before sleep with red light, rather than increasing that light during sleep.
‘And that may be what leads to better sleep.’
Blue wavelength light – like the bright color of LED lights seen during the day – has been found to inhibit the production of melatonin, a hormone needed to signal the human body when it’s time to sleep.
Even some medical studies say the connection He has exaggeratedresearch from Harvard and the University of Toronto confirmed the connection between this light and changes in hormone production and circadian rhythms.
“The main meaning of our work is to show that the standard of analysis used by the diagnostic industry and the medical research community is inadequate for evaluating the effects of the circulation,” said Harvard Medical School professor Charles Czeisler.
In other words, light equal to bright light or lighting is needed for good sleep.
