Jewish job seekers face significant discrimination in US labor market ahead of new Trump administration, ADL study finds

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released a revealing new study on Wednesday significant discrimination Jewish and Israeli American job seekers collide in the US job market.

A study conducted by the ADL’s Center for the Study of Antisemitism and led by leading labor economist Brian Tomlin, Ph.D., found that American Jewish job applicants needed to send 24.2% more applications to receive the same number of first positive responses from potential employers , as well as Americans of Western European descent when applying for the same role.

For resumes with an Israeli-sounding name and professional experience, applicants had to send 39% more inquiries to get the same number of responses from potential employers compared to job seekers whose names and experience indicate a more Western European origin, but who otherwise had the appropriate qualifications, according to the study.

As the ADL and the FBI already track the rise of anti-Semitism through physical or verbal crimes such as assaults, vandalism and harassment, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt explained that their new study provides the first empirical evidence to support how this trend translates into anti-Jewish attitudes. in the village the US labor market.

“In this empirical study, we see a clear pattern of discrimination that supports what we’ve heard anecdotally,” Greenblatt told Fox News Digital. “There are real consequences in our labor market where Jews and Israelis are discriminated against. It’s a huge, underreported problem, and we’re just breaking it now.”

“So this data is important because we’re on the cusp of a new political administration in Washington. And we see the results of irresponsible anti-Semitism,” he continued. “At ADL, we have been focused on this fight for a long time. But since October 7, we have seen the legitimization of anti-Jewish prejudice. We saw the expansion anti-Zionist bias.”

To conduct the study, Tomlin sent 3,000 inquiries to administrative assistance job postings—a field chosen because it is widely in demand across geographic regions and is a “promising” role—across the United States between May and October, using Email text and resume are the same. . The requests differed only in the name of the applicant, which was chosen to “sound” Jewish, Israeli, or Western European, and supplemented with “signals” of likely Jewish, Israeli, or Western European origin.

The ADL said a single request from a single applicant was submitted for each publication, which was randomly assigned. In the course of the specifications, the study found that “both the Jewish and Israeli treatments experienced a decrease in the rate of positive responses relative to the control.”

Greenblatt argued that incidents of anti-Israel demonstrations on college campuses, harassment of Jews in public spaces and the blocking of access to synagogues in the United States have “longer-term effects” as these events “poison the environment” for job seekers. can easily be identified as Jewish or Israeli.

“We know that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism because it affirms prejudice against people simply because of their national origin. And we see it here. And we know that anti-Semitic rhetoric has real-world consequences, because it again leads to bigotry against people. who identify as Jewish,” Greenblatt told Fox News Digital. “We won’t tolerate it against any other group and we shouldn’t tolerate it here. It is against the law to discriminate against people because of their faith, their ethnicity, their national origin. And we hope that the Trump administration, specifically the Trump Department of Labor, will take action to stop this once and for all.”

Greenblatt cited a new complaint filed this week by the editor-in-chief of a Jewish student magazine in University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

A petition against the student government alleged that UCLA’s cultural affairs commissioner warned against hiring “Zionists,” created a “no-hire list” and that all students who wrote about their Jewish heritage but did not necessarily mention the Israeli war in Gaza in response to the October 7 attacks – their applications were rejected, Campus Reform reports.

“We saw different industries – therapists, artists, investors, authors, all attacked, excluded, not hired simply because they are Jewish. We’ve seen blacklists circulate trying to identify, quote, a Zionist. I think this research shows that … companies like this have a real impact on the world,” Greenblatt told Fox News Digital. “People who make these efforts are not some kind of activists. They are fans. And they create an environment that is poisoned against any Jew.”

“And again, anecdotally, we’ve seen this in the past,” Greenblatt said. “Now we have empirical data that supports why I hope that President Trump, why I hope that the White House will step up and stop this in its tracks. When he was in the White House four years ago, President Trump signed a very important Executive Order to Combat Anti-Semitism, and I am optimistic that he will step up his efforts in this new second term and take additional steps to demonstrate that anti-Semitism is un-American. and he has no place in our society.
