A British city has the ‘new Berlin‘Is working on a £ 1bn revival project – with the opening of a new beer hall and music room the latest in a series of developments that revive the area.
Underbank opened in Stockport, a city of just under 300,000 and less than 10 minutes on Manchester’s train.
The destination was compared to GermanThe capital-especially known for its lively nightlife, avant-garde art and rich history-by DJ Luke Unabommber in 2023.
And the owners of the new business, Des and Nina O’Malley, would like to use the atmosphere.
‘The street parties, the parking lot, Foodie Friday – everyone started saying Stockport is like the new Berlin. But so far everything has felt temporarily. We want to build something permanently, ‘Des said Manchester’s best.
In a former bank (which was more recently a furniture store), there will be a variety of local beers among the drinks offered, as well as a frozen margarita bar and tequila shots in a space that mixes a retro industrial look with nod to music heritage.
On the outside of the building is a mural that Joy Division, the Ian Curtis-Fronted Orchestra, recorded their debut album unknown pleasure in Stockport’s Strawberry Studios.
There is also recording studio and event space in the basement.

The commitment to high-quality music sees that Underbank-which describes itself as a ‘sound system’-the first place in Stockport to install a void system, known for its leading sound technology and popular in venues and at festivals around the world.
The opening weekend used the facilities well and a series of artists who blow out music to a sold -out crowd.
The owners hope to expand the property to offer a bar on the roof from next summer.
The bar is in an area of Stockport, known as the underbank, which branded the town’s answer to London’s Soho due to the series in the outlets.
It also appears as a background for the Netflix Mystery Series The strangerBased on the book by Harlan Coben and with Richard Armitage and Siobhan Finneran.
Three years ago, the Sunday Times Stockport listed as one of the ‘best upcoming areas to invest’.
And this year, the same publication has arranged the city under the most impressive places to live across the Greater Manchester.
A new £ 140m transport changer and roof park, Viaduct Park, was opened in March 2024 as part of the £ 1bn redevelopment of the city.

Visitors to the city can be historic sites, such as the Air Raid Shelters and Bramall Hall, an impressive Tudor Manor, Spot Street Art and wander the bleeding market.
Stockport is well connected with cities in the area, with trains running to Manchester every five to 10 minutes on weekdays.
The trip to Manchester Piccadilly lasts about 10 minutes.
Services to Liverpool run three times per hour during the week, and it should not last more than 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Furthermore, Stockport will take about three hours with a quick change at Manchester Piccadilly.
