Located in the Okadaya More Shopping Center in JapanThe Kawasaki -shi region, the small escalator – known as the Petit Calator – is just 83.4 cm/2.8FT high, has only five steps and offers a ride that only lasts six seconds.
The pint-sized people-mover is deemed remarkable enough to earn it own web page.
It states that it was built in 1989 when an underground corridor opened by the Okadaya More shopping center with nearby Azelea Mall.
The web page reads: “The underground course of Azalea was located between (two floors) of more’s, so (the escalator) was created as a solution to this problem.”
However, the escalator does not connect the floors at all.
According to Strangeness centralPedestrians hoping on board must still use a small step to reach the next floor, making the escalator quite pointless.
On the positive side it has a praise of the Guinness World Records – who recognizes it as the world’s ‘shortest escalator’, an honor that has lasted for over 30 years – and internet fame.
