Root has announced today that he has raised $ 9 million in seed funding to create a next generation social platform, which offers customizable applications designed to build and maintain large communities. The company plans to launch the closed beta for the application soon.
Root as a platform is notable for its personalization and application framework. Servers can have various functions and specific applications for the community. For example, Lunch Root will have first party applications such as a RAID planner for MMO communities and a task tracker. These applications are directly integrated into Root, that is, players do not have to access third -party software in order to keep track of their community needs and anyone who uses JavaScript can create applications typical of their communities.
Jesse Dietrichson, founder and CEO of Root, told Gamesbeat in an interview that Root began as a way to solve pain points inside the great communities, such as MMO guilds. “What success means for a community is so dramatically different for another community. When you look at platforms like Discord and so on, the only thing communities get to succeed are basic chat functions … I think, deeply, that the needs of all communities are different depending on the community you are.”
Building the next generation chat platform
In addition to the application frame, Root is also slightly different from the other chat applications. It offers features such as file folders, a tab function to access various servers and a chat interface. Dietrichson told Gamesbeat that these functions help solve some of the aforementioned pain points. “How do you organize and secure -you see what you have to see? We wanted to solve this problem. I think web browsers solved this problem so elegant and everyone in the world knows how to use a web browser.”
The Jack Creator “Courage” Dunlop, an early Root investor, said in a statement: “I have spent years building a community around games, so I have seen what works first hand and what is not.

Matthew Brown, VP At Tadline Ventures, added: “ The root is the rare generational jump: the change rate in the thought of the platform that is not often produced. It is not only a better version than it is outside, but it is a complete reimagination of how the online communities are organized and prosper. Root represents a unique opportunity to support a team that builds infrastructure for the future of digital
Dietrichson told Gamesbeat: “The root is hyper-split in the community. We want communities that work together, try to grow, need help with other tools that are going to other platforms today; we want these communities to prosper in the root. We want these communities to grow successfully.
