They are a staple in UK kitchens.
But it seems that you have been storing your eggs incorrectly.
That’s according to Adam Oakley, storage expert from Door to Store, who has revealed the best places to store them.
Most refrigerators have compartments for making eggs in the door.
However, Oakley says the site is too good – and can increase the risk of contamination, as well as breakage.
‘The fridge door has constant temperature fluctuations due to the constant opening and closing,’ he explained.
‘This unstable environment allows bacteria to thrive and can weaken the egg’s natural defenses, speeding up spoilage.’
Instead of the door, the expert says that eggs should be placed in the deep, central part of your refrigerator.

The center of your fridge has a constant temperature, usually below 2°C.
This is important to keep your eggs fresh, according to Oakley.
You may worry that storing your eggs in the middle of the fridge leaves them vulnerable to unwanted odors or flavors from other foods.
However, Oakely says a dedicated tray or container with a lid should do the trick.
“This addition not only helps to keep it cool but also keeps the fridge ready,” he added.
Meanwhile, for those tempted to skip the fridge altogether, Mr Oakley strongly advises against it.
‘Eggs kept in a warm environment start to degrade within a few days, especially in hot climates,’ he said.
‘Although eggs stored outside the fridge should be used within 1-3 weeks, eggs stored in the freezer can last up to 3-5 weeks with their freshness.’

However, even refrigerated eggs have a best before date.
“Although refrigeration extends shelf life, it’s always best to eat eggs within a few weeks to ensure flavor and texture,” added Mr Oakley.
Beyond refrigeration, the expert also has a few tips to keep your eggs fresh for a long time.
First, they recommend keeping them in their original carton, which will provide a protective barrier.
Next, avoid washing your eggs before storing them, as this removes their natural coating and makes them more susceptible to bacteria.
You should also put the eggs with the end facing down, to help keep the center of the yolk.
Finally, Mr. Oakley says you should keep eggs away from strong-smelling foods so they don’t pick up any unwanted odors.
